So today marks the official beginning of my extended project, wohoo. As we are given free reign to examine anything we wish I have chosen a little obsession of mine, Manic Street Preachers and more specifically the lyrics of one Mr Richard James Edwards, the main lyricist for the band who disappeared in mysterious circumstances on 1st February 1995.
My end result should hopefully be an essay and also a powerpoint containing some of the lyrics and the music it was set to but my first task was to decide what my focus was.
Stuff I did:
Met Ms Price, my supervisor and gave a basic outline of my project. We arrived at 3 possible focal studies, biographical links to the nature of his lyrics, the effects of his personal experience and condition on the lyrics or looking at how his lyrics compare to similar poets.
Decided to focus on the second idea and look at his mental state throughout the period where he was an active lyric writer (1991-1995).
Decided that it would only be neccesary to examine the lyrics for some songs and that I must therefore read them all over to decide which are the most telling. This I shall do in the next week.
Very excited about this project now. It will give me a chance to independently study a subject I find fascinating.
